The final year that
turns an HND into a degree

One year at level 6, taken after a Higher National Diploma, ending with the same honours degree as the four-year route. Entry is limited to graduates of our partner college's own HND courses.

A top-up year is the third year of a degree, taken by people who already hold a level 5 qualification. It is why the HND is worth starting: two years to a working qualification, one more to a full honours degree, with the option to stop and earn in between.

Who can apply

Students who completed the HND with our partner college in the same subject. This is a progression route rather than an open application, and an HND from another provider does not qualify. If yours is from elsewhere, speak to an advisor and we will tell you honestly whether there is a route.

What the year covers

The step from doing the work to directing it: strategy, leadership, quality, dispute resolution or evidence, depending on the subject, plus a substantial project you scope yourself around a real problem.

How it is funded

It is a normal undergraduate year, so eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan and maintenance support. Previous study counts towards your entitlement, so if the HND was funded the top-up year normally still is. Student Finance England decides.

Top-up degree courses

One-year level 6 routes in business and management, construction management, and health, wellbeing and social care.

Can I do a top-up if my HND is from another college?
Not on these courses. The partner restricts them to their own HND graduates. Talk to an advisor about other routes rather than applying and being rejected.
How long does a top-up degree take?
One year full time. Intakes run around three times a year, so you do not always have to wait for September.
Is the degree the same as a three-year one?
Yes. You graduate with the same honours degree from the awarding university. The route in was different, the award is not.
Will Student Finance cover a top-up year?
Usually, if you have entitlement left. Previous study reduces it, so check your position with Student Finance England before you commit. They make the final decision.
